Women living in Kijoka took over protect Bashofu.
Bashofu the girls came in the footsteps weave to put the thought is the traditional craft to represent Okinawa. And, it can be proud of Okinawa in the world.

Traditional craft to be able to be proud of to the world Ogimi 「Bashofu」

History of Bashofu is quite old, has a history of more than 500 years.
Feel that I was smooth and light is good Bashofu. In addition, it has been useful as of summer clothes by airy. In Okinawa, and it has been worn by people is not limited to identification.
With the modernization of post-war, Bashofu was nearly cut off. However, by volunteers with a focus on Toshiko Taira, Bashofu was inherited.
And, Bashofu was established as traditional industries Ogimi village. Then, Bashofu of Kijoka was certified in (April 1974) nationally designated important intangible cultural heritage.

Living national treasure Toshiko Taira

Toshiko was born in the village Ogimi Kijoka 1921. The childhood of her, and grew up watching her mother from weaving Bashofu. The help of a mother, she began to climb the weaving machine someday. That was the origin of the weaving Toshiko.
After the war, Toshiko is as entertaining breast strongly thought to Bashofu. Toshiko came back to Kijoka that was devastated after the war, and decided to try to revive Bashofu.
The history of her, was also the very process we widely known the world is "Bashofu of Kijoka".
To praise the achievements of her, Toshiko Taira was recognized as Living national treasure in June 2000.
